Getting Started with FlashDevelop3 and AS3

Aha! Finally. Time for my first tutorial: Getting up and running with FlashDevelop3. Firstly, FlashDevelop 3 only runs on Windows XP/Vista, and requires the .NET 2 runtime. Additionally, to compile AS3 code you will need the Java 1.6 runtime and the Adobe Flex SDK. Ok, let’s go!

Unified Web Development

One language to rule them all? Perhaps, at least in terms of web development. haXe is fascinating. One language across all tiers of your web application: on the server, in the browser, and even on the desktop. haXe compiles down to Neko bytecode (to run on the server), JavaScript (for all your Ajax needs), and ActionScript bytecode (for Flash Player goodness). Combine haXe and PureMVC, and you’ve got some real power!

AVM2 Performance – Sprite Alpha vs. Fill Alpha

Consider a black box with 50% opacity. A sprite with a black rectangular fill in it. Which would render quicker? A sprite where the black fill has 50% alpha (0.5) A sprite with 50% alpha containing a solid fill Anyone done any tests?

Cowshed Productions

Cow was one of the first ActionScript3 projects that I developed at HelloComputer. Built with FlashDevelop and compiled with the free Flex2 SDK Compiler. Fully content manageable. Look out for my exploding dandelions, and touchy butterflies. www.cowshedproductions.co.uk ps. the site is designed for hi-resolution (1280 x 1024 and up), but works at the standard 1024 rez.

Shell VPower Diesel

A competition microsite for Shell VPower Diesel. The track was modelled in 3dStudio Max, and exported directly to a Papervision3D class with the handy AS3 Geom Class Exporter plugin. [Site Offline - competition finished]
