Getting Started with FlashDevelop3 and AS3

Aha! Finally. Time for my first tutorial: Getting up and running with FlashDevelop3.

Firstly, FlashDevelop 3 only runs on Windows XP/Vista, and requires the .NET 2 runtime. Additionally, to compile AS3 code you will need the Java 1.6 runtime and the Adobe Flex SDK. Ok, let’s go!

Unified Web Development

One language to rule them all? Perhaps, at least in terms of web development.

haXe is fascinating. One language across all tiers of your web application: on the server, in the browser, and even on the desktop. haXe compiles down to Neko bytecode (to run on the server), JavaScript (for all your Ajax needs), and ActionScript bytecode (for Flash Player goodness).

Combine haXe and PureMVC, and you’ve got some real power!

ExtJS – Wooah

Holy smokes! I recently discovered ExtJS. Wow! It’s currently at version 2.0 and I have to complement Jack Slocum on the incredibly well designed API.

So, to get to grips with it, I started building a little CMS using ExtJS and CodeIgniter. Got stuck in over the weekend, and managed to build my first ExtJS component – a data grid for picking ids from foreign tables.

It also gave me a chance to play around with the native JSON capabilities of PHP5.2

HTML Body Background Color

A silly little thing, but it amazes me how many website developers don’t bother setting the body background-color for their sites, assuming that all browsers have a white background. I set my browser’s background color to grey to make sure that I don’t forget to do this myself.

AVM2 Performance – Sprite Alpha vs. Fill Alpha

Consider a black box with 50% opacity. A sprite with a black rectangular fill in it.

Which would render quicker?

  1. A sprite where the black fill has 50% alpha (0.5)
  2. A sprite with 50% alpha containing a solid fill

Anyone done any tests?

Dan Berkowitz Portfolio

Another portfolio website I built for a friend. It uses a similar engine to the website I built for Maciek, but this time makes use of PureMVC and has a JavaScript hack to make the mouse-wheel work on Mac OS X.

Moonlighting Film Production Services

My first project using the PureMVC framework and SWFAddress (for deep-linking). Oh, and using an old version of Papervision3D.

The Begining

Word up! As in.. WordPress up and running!

So, my plan is to throw up some tutorials here. The kind that would have helped me a bunch when I started on my journey into OO flash development.

I want to cover FlashDevelop, Tweener, Papervision3D and PureMVC amongst other flash/web related things.

I’m also going to use this site as a portfolio of sorts. When I get the time I’m going to look into building a flash portfolio that uses this site as it’s CMS.

Cowshed Productions

Cow was one of the first ActionScript3 projects that I developed at HelloComputer. Built with FlashDevelop and compiled with the free Flex2 SDK Compiler. Fully content manageable. Look out for my exploding dandelions, and touchy butterflies.

ps. the site is designed for hi-resolution (1280 x 1024 and up), but works at the standard 1024 rez.
